Pool Essentials Checklist: What to Pack for a South Florida Family Pool Day

Updated October 12, 2026

A pool day should not turn into three trips back to the car. This companion to our Pool Essentials checklist keeps swim gear, shade, snacks and the ride-home cleanup in one place. Whether you are packing for a backyard afternoon or a community pool in South Florida, start with what you already own and skip gear the pool provides. These are product options, not a claim that we personally tested every item.

Pool Essentials Checklist

Pool Essentials checklist: six cards covering swim and play essentials, comfort and shade, snacks and drinks, personal items, kids essentials and extra good ideas, each with blank checkboxes

Swim & play

Pack swimsuits, one towel per person, goggles, pool toys and floats, water-resistant sunscreen, SPF lip balm, water shoes, a change of clothes, and a dry bag or waterproof phone pouch. Put the dry clothes somewhere splash-free. Follow sunscreen label directions and reapply after swimming, sweating or toweling off.

Comfort & shade

Pack sunglasses, a hat or visor, cover ups or rash guards, a beach/pool chair or lounger if needed, an umbrella or pop-up shade where allowed, a cooling towel or misting fan, a lightweight blanket or mat, a tote or mesh bag, and extra hair ties. Skip chairs and shade gear if your pool already provides them. Keep walkways clear and follow the pool's setup rules.

Snacks & drinks

Pack reusable water bottles to keep drinks cold, snacks, electrolyte drinks or packets if wanted, a cooler with ice, insulated cups or tumblers, lunch or easy meals, reusable snack containers, and gum or mints. Bring a refillable bottle for each person. Check outside-food rules and leave glass at home. Electrolyte packets are optional, not a replacement for water.

Personal items

Pack your phone and charger, waterproof phone pouch, wallet, hand sanitizer and wipes, medications, feminine products, deodorant, contact lenses/glasses with a case, a small first aid kit, and a hair brush or comb. The phone pouch is linked once in Swim & play above. Keep electronics, medication and personal items in a dry pocket; follow medication storage directions. Pack your usual essentials instead of buying a new kit for everything.

Kids essentials

Pack life jackets or floaties as appropriate, extra swimsuits, regular diapers and swim diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, pool games and toys, refillable water bottles, snacks, a stroller if needed, and a sun hat and rash guard. Choose a properly fitted approved life jacket when appropriate; inflatable floaties are toys, not safety equipment. Assign an attentive adult to watch the water, and keep infants and toddlers within arm's reach. No product replaces supervision. Check swim diapers often and change them away from the pool; they do not keep germs out of the water.

Extra good ideas

Optional extras: a waterproof Bluetooth speaker where permitted, waterproof playing cards or games, Ziploc bags for wet clothes, a laundry bag for wet swimsuits, a Tide To Go pen, extra sunscreen, aloe vera or after-sun lotion, insect repellent, a portable fan, and trash bags. Sunscreen and the portable fan are linked once in earlier sections. Keep wet gear separate on the ride home, then unpack it instead of leaving damp swimsuits zipped up overnight. If thunder starts, get out of the water and go into a safe building or enclosed vehicle; an umbrella or canopy is not safe shelter.
